Blue lace agate is the name given to a chalcedony that has thin bands of
bluish-white agate delicately layered between thin bands of transparent to
translucent agate. The bands feature complex curves and other patterns that
resemble a lace-embroidered fabric - thus the name.
Blue lace agate is a very popular gemstone. It is often tumble-polished or
cut into cabochon-shaped gemstones and used in many types of jewelry such as
earrings, rings, bracelets, beads, pendants and cabochons. South Africa
has been a very important source of blue lace agate but some of the finest
specimens are mined in Namibia. The tumble-polished stones in the
photograph above were produced in Namibia.
